 Church of Agia Zoni
Situated at the entrance of the village’s core is the main church of the community which is dedicated to Agia Zoni. The church was built in 1998 and the inauguration ceremony was held in 2001.

It is a three-roomed church of Byzantine type. The interior of the church is adorned with a wooden-carven iconostasis which was designed by Mr. Nicos Taliadwros, as well as with hagiographies which were painted recently. The church is 22 metres wide and 32 metres long.

According to tradition, many visions have shown the residents of Apesia to the place where the icon of Agia Zoni might be. However, several excavations which have taken place since 1955 have not revealed the icon. Therefore, the residents decided to build a church at this place.

Church of Agios Georgios

The church of Agios Georgios is located in the core of the village. Both the bell tower and the church have been renovated recently.

It is a single-roomed church with a simple wooden iconostasis inside. As far as its dimensions are concerned, the church is 20 metres long and 7 metres wide. It is worth noting that old icons and books are preserved in the church.

Chapel of Zoodochos Pigi (Kyras)

Situated within a distance of three kilometres west of the heart of Apesia, in a landscape of unique beauty, is the chapel of Zoodochos Pigi.

The exact construction date of the church remains unknown. However, according to testimonies given prior to 1900, a new building was constructed between the years 1888-1900 on the foundations of an older one. The same also applies for the sanctuary. In particular, it is unknown when it was designed, although a part of the old church is preserved.

Both the internal and the external part of the church suffered a series of interventions. In 1967, concrete was placed on the stony floor and iron doors were placed, whereas in 1996 a door was created next to the sanctuary and a bell tower was built. The church’s inauguration ceremony was held during the 20th century, either in 1950 or in 1952.

The church is built of stone, simple, one-roomed with an arch. Near the small church there is a big stone-built fountain. It has a rectangular shape, its length is 14 metres and its width 6 metres.

According to narration of older residents, while the old chapel was being built, there was a drought problem, and therefore they had to use “milk from the flocks offered by the shepherds of the area as construction material”.

Another tradition mentions that the master builder had a vision of Virgin Mary, the “Zoodochos Pigi”, who, as this is preserved in the magazine of Agia Varvara, “told him to throw his trowel and that he would find water at the spot where the trowel would fall”.  The master builder did exactly what Virgin Mary had indicated to him. Within 100 metres from the church, at the spot where the trowel fell, water began to flow. At that point there is today the miraculous holy-water of Panagia which has cured many patients, mainly ones with skin problems. Many of the loyal Christians who were cured hang several offerings such as clothes on a tree.

Finally, it is worth mentioning one of the miracles described in the aforementioned magazine, in particular the case of young man who “was suffering from herpes zoster on his belly. The doctors had told him that it would take some time to heal. However, after he was urged by some of his relatives, he took mud from the Holy-water and placed it on his belly. Miraculously, on the next day herpes was gone”.
